GCC’s latest development in offering well-rounded access to CTE programs began as a conceptual study on an underutilized part of the campus, with the intention of enclosing and converting unused classroom space to accommodate a range of STEAM programs. HSS conducted the programming and feasibility study, collaborating with college faculty and district-wide stakeholders to capture the ambitious requirements for engineering, robotics, drone technology, and mixed-reality developments, all within a limited existing building footprint and a tight budget.
Design Strategy
The design concept report was met with enthusiasm by college leadership, granting full funding for design and construction of an entirely new structure. The new STEAM Center is designed around the central CTE workshop, enclosed by a sloping roof form and taking advantage of its proximity to outdoor spaces and campus pathways, bringing in plentiful natural light and fresh air. The open shop floor houses mechanical training equipment, high ceilings for drone testing, a large collaborative work bench area, testing & exhibition zones, and proper storage, exhaust, and ventilation throughout. Across the hall, the mixed-reality studio is outfitted with special acoustic assemblies and rigging for a variety of playtesting scenarios.
